From the outside, a kiln looks simple enough. Inside, though, it feels like a little world of its own. Every firing carries a sense of anticipation. We stack the shelves, close the door, set the program and then wait while the heat begins its slow and steady climb.
Our kiln has become part of the rhythm of the studio. When it is running, there is always a feeling that something exciting is happening behind the scenes. Clay is changing. Glazes are maturing. Pieces are finding their final form.
Opening the kiln is always a moment we look forward to. Sometimes the results are exactly what we imagined. Other times the kiln offers a surprise, a shift in colour or texture that brings a new idea to life. Even after years of working with clay, that moment still feels a little bit magical.

There is a lot of care behind every firing. Pieces need to be completely dry. Shelves need to be prepared. The load needs to be balanced so everything receives even heat. The firing schedule must suit the clay body and glaze. All of this quiet work shapes the outcome long before the kiln begins to warm.
It is a lovely blend of science, craft and a touch of mystery. The kiln is where everything comes together and where the final character of each piece reveals itself.
Watching that transformation never loses its charm!
