A Day in the Life of a Pottery Studio Owner

People often imagine that running a pottery studio means spending long stretches of the day making pots. In reality, the day moves quickly and is a mix of practical tasks, teaching, problem solving and constant small decisions that keep everything running smoothly.

The morning usually starts with a walk through the studio to see what needs attention. We check pieces drying on the shelves, prepare clay for classes, set up tools, refill slip buckets and get the wheels ready. There is a steady rhythm to these tasks and they set the foundation for the rest of the day.

Once students arrive, the energy of the studio shifts. Wheels start spinning, conversations begin and everyone settles into their own pace of making. We move around the room helping with centring, answering questions, giving demonstrations and sorting out the little issues that appear when clay decides to behave in unexpected ways. Every group is different and every class brings out new ideas and new challenges.

In between sessions, the work does not stop. We unload kilns, load new ones, glaze pieces, check moisture levels, clean up tools, manage orders, reply to messages, organise the gallery and take care of the never ending sweep up of clay dust that finds its way into every corner. Some days are smooth. Some days feel like a puzzle made of twenty separate tasks that all need attention at the same time.

There is also a lot of behind the scenes work that people rarely see. Booking systems need updating. Workshops need planning. Stock needs checking. Deliveries arrive. Invoices appear. Visitors drop in with questions or to pick up finished pieces. The day moves in and out of creative work and administrative work in a way that keeps us on our toes.

Even with the busy pace, there is something very satisfying about running a studio like this. We watch people grow more confident each week. We see pieces move from soft clay to finished work. We hear the conversations that spark new ideas and new friendships. The studio becomes a shared space where people come to learn, make and unwind.

By the end of the day, when the last wheel stops and the last bench is wiped down, there is a clear sense of work done and work still to come. Running a pottery studio is not quiet or slow or dreamy. It is active, hands on and rewarding in a way that builds over time. It is a job that mixes creativity with logistics and community with craft, and it keeps us moving every single day.
