Pottery Courses in Sydney: Learning Clay at The Northern Pottery

If you have been thinking about trying pottery, you are not alone. There is something very appealing about working with clay. It is physical, creative, slightly unpredictable and very satisfying when it starts to make sense.

At The Northern Pottery in Hornsby, we offer pottery courses and workshops for people who want to learn properly, whether you are completely new to clay or ready to build on skills you already have.

Pottery is not something you need to be naturally good at before you begin. Most people start with no experience at all. The important thing is being willing to slow down, get your hands dirty and enjoy the process.

Why learn pottery in Sydney?

Sydney has a growing ceramics community, but it can still be hard to find a pottery studio that feels approachable, practical and genuinely supportive.

The Northern Pottery was created to be a local studio for people on the upper North Shore and northern suburbs who want to learn ceramics in a hands on way. We are based in Hornsby, close to the train station and shopping centre, which makes it easy to come to a regular course after work, during the day or on the weekend.

Our courses are small, with a maximum of eight students. That means you get proper guidance, time to ask questions and enough space to learn at your own pace.

What happens in a pottery course?

A good pottery course gives you more than a quick taste of clay. It gives you time to understand the material, practise the techniques and build confidence.

Depending on the course, you might learn how to:

  • centre clay on the pottery wheel

  • throw bowls, cylinders, cups and other useful forms

  • trim and finish your work

  • make forms by hand using pinch, coil and slab techniques

  • decorate surfaces with texture, colour and underglaze

  • glaze your pieces before they are fired in the kiln

There is a lot to learn, but you do not need to know everything at once. Pottery rewards repetition. The more you practise, the more your hands begin to understand what the clay is doing.

Our Pottery Wheel courses are designed for beginners who want to learn wheel throwing properly. You will start with the basics, including preparing the clay, centring, opening, pulling walls and making simple forms.

Wheel throwing can be frustrating at first. That is normal. Everyone has a few collapsed pots, uneven bowls and mysterious wobbles along the way. The point is not to make perfect work immediately. The point is to learn how the clay responds and how to work with it rather than fight it.

Over time, you will begin to make pieces that feel more controlled and intentional. For many students, that moment is what makes pottery so addictive.

If the wheel is not your main interest, handbuilding is a beautiful way to work with clay. Our Clay by Hand course focuses on making pottery using simple, direct techniques such as pinching, coiling and slab building.

Handbuilding is slower and often more sculptural. It is a good option if you are interested in form, texture, surface decoration or making pieces with a more individual character.

You do not need previous experience. You just need curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

Short workshops are a great way to try pottery, but an eight week course gives you a different experience. You have time to practise, make mistakes, ask questions, return to ideas and see your work develop over several weeks.

You also become part of the studio rhythm. You see what other people are making, learn from their questions, and start to understand the many small decisions that go into making ceramics.

That is one of the best parts of learning pottery in a group. It is not just about your own work. It is also about being around other people who are learning, experimenting and slowly improving alongside you.

Ready to start?

If you would like to try pottery, have a look at our current courses and workshops. Places are limited because we keep our groups small, so joining the newsletter is also the best way to hear when new courses are released.

Your first pot may not be perfect. That is completely fine. It will still be yours, and it will be the beginning of learning something properly.
