Throwing Big: A Wheel Masterclass
This one-day intensive workshop is designed for potters who are confident on the wheel and ready to throw bigger. Led by Dan D'Appio, Potter & The Northern Pottery Founder, you’ll explore the technical skills and creative approaches needed to create large-scale ceramic forms with confidence and control.
Whether you want to make tall vases, wide bowls, or multi-sectioned vessels, this is your opportunity to deep-dive into scale, structure, and surface with expert support and studio space to explore and get messy.

Maximum 8 participants

Level: Intermediate – for those comfortable with basic wheelthrowing skills
Clay
-
Bring your own clay – please note all pieces will be fired to cone 6 (mid-fire).
We recommend using stoneware or mid-fire clay suitable for wheelthrowing. -
Clay available to purchase on the day – 10kg bags of our buff stoneware or terracotta for $24.
Firing of one large piece is included. Additional pieces can be fired at standard studio rates.
What to bring

An apron and a towel to keep you and your workspace clean and tidy

Your own pottery tools (recommended)
(Studio tools are available, but we encourage you to bring what you’re used to. A range of different tools will be demonstrated during the workshop.)

A plate of something to share for lunch
(Optional, but encouraged – we’ll break for lunch together in a relaxed, communal vibe. Tea, coffee and light snacks provided.)

This session is best suited to potters who:

Intermediate level – suitable for those who have wheel-throwing experience and are confident centring and pulling medium-sized forms.

Studio Expectations:

Arrive on time and allow time to clean up before your workshop ends

You’re expected to leave your workspace clean and tools returned

Firing Policy:

Firing services are available for bisque and midfire range only (no stoneware firings)

Pieces are fired according to our regular studio firing schedule

All clay and objects must be appropriate for our firings and must labelled with your name
